What happens to scrap cars?

What documents do I need to scrap my car?

What happens on collection day?
When it’s time for your vehicle to be collected and taken away, the collection agent will arrive in the truck that will tow or lift your car. They will be able to present ID should you wish to see it. A short check of the car will take place, just to confirm the details you gave us about the vehicle’s condition – for example, if you’ve told us your car has an engine or catalytic converter when it doesn’t, your price may be altered. Then, it’ll be taken away and your payment will be processed. Cash payments aren’t allowed due to the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so you’ll be paid via bank transfer.
What if my car still has finance on it?
A car on outstanding finance isn’t yours to scrap until the agreement is settled. Speak to your finance provider first, as they may give you a settlement figure or deal with the disposal themselves. Once the finance is cleared, get a quote from us as normal.
Do I get a road tax refund when I scrap my car?
Yes. Once the DVLA has been told the car has been sold and is no longer yours, any full months of remaining tax are refunded automatically. The refund goes to the name and address on the V5C, so make sure those details are up to date. You don’t need to apply for it separately.
Can I keep my private number plate after I scrap my car?
Yes, but it will cost you. You’ll need to apply for the plate to be put on retention via the Gov.uk website, then you’ll have to pay a fee (£80 at the time of writing) and fill in a form known as the V778 retention document. Once everything is processed, you’re able to transfer the plate onto your new vehicle.
