You’ll need your V5C logbook and some photo ID, such as a driving licence or passport. Proof of address, like a recent utility bill, can also help. Hand the V5C over at collection but keep the yellow slip, as you’ll need it to tell the DVLA.
Can I scrap my car without a V5C?
Yes, in most cases. You’ll need to show the car is yours another way, usually with photo ID and proof of address, so let us know when you get your quote. You’ll also need to tell the DVLA yourself that the car has been scrapped.
Can I scrap a car with outstanding finance?
Not until the finance is paid off. Until then, the car legally belongs to the finance company, not you. Ask your lender for a settlement figure, clear the balance, and then you’re free to scrap it.
Can I scrap my car if I’ve lost the keys?

How do I get paid?
By bank transfer, once your car has been collected. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, scrap cars can’t be paid for in cash, so a bank transfer keeps the sale traceable and above board.
Do I need to be there for the collection?
You do not need to be present if you are unavailable, and can nominate someone to represent you if necessary. The person representing you must be over the age of 18 with ID and proof of address.
Can I keep my private number plate?
Yes, but you need to take it off the car through the DVLA before it’s collected. Once the car has been scrapped, the registration is deleted from the DVLA website and can’t be saved. To avoid this, you must either put it on retention or transfer it to another vehicle before you begin the scrapping process.
What should I do before my car is collected
Clear out your belongings, including the glovebox and boot, and take out any parking permits as these are regularly forgotten. Keep the yellow slip from your V5C so you can tell the DVLA the car has been scrapped. Most importantly, don’t cancel your insurance until the car has actually gone in case of any delays.
