What documents do I need to scrap my car?
Your V5C logbook and some photo ID, like a passport or driving licence, are the two main things. Hand the V5C over with the car, but tear off and keep the yellow slip. Lost your logbook? It won’t usually stop you scrapping the car.
Can I scrap my car without a V5C logbook?
Usually, yes. You’ll need to show photo ID and proof of address, along with something that ties you to the car, such as an old MOT certificate or a service record. Let us know when you get your quote so your collector can check the right details.
Can I scrap a car with outstanding finance?
Only once the finance has been paid off, or your finance company gives written permission. Until then, your lender still has a legal stake in the car. Get a settlement figure from your lender first, then come back to us for a quote.

Do I get a road tax refund when I scrap my car?
Yes, you’ll get back any full calendar months of tax that are left. The DVLA cancels your tax and sends the refund automatically once it knows the car has been scrapped. It’s sent to the keeper’s name and address on the V5C, so check these are correct.
How do I tell the DVLA my car has been scrapped?
You can do it online or by post once the car has been collected. The online service asks for the 11-digit reference number on your V5C, so write it down before you hand the logbook over. It costs nothing, and not telling the DVLA can lead to a £1,000 fine.
Will I get a Certificate of Destruction?
You will if your car is scrapped and you have requested one. It’s issued by the Authorised Treatment Facility, normally within seven days, and proves the car has been legally destroyed. Cars sold for salvage don’t get one, because they aren’t being destroyed.
Do I have to be there for the collection?
You do not need to be present if you are unavailable, and can nominate someone to represent you if necessary. The person representing you must be over the age of 18 with ID and proof of address. This is also the case if you are scrapping a car on behalf of someone else, such as an elderly relative or after a bereavement – although you must make this clear whilst getting a quote in this situation.
Can I keep my personalised number plate?
