What documents do I need to scrap my car?
Your V5C logbook is the main thing, and some buyers will also ask for photo ID before they pay you. The collection driver fills in the yellow section of the V5C with you and takes the rest of the logbook with the car. If you don’t have the V5C, you can still scrap the car; just tell us when you get your quote.
Can I scrap my car without a V5C?
Yes. You don’t legally need a V5C to scrap a car, but the buyer will want other proof it’s yours, such as photo ID and proof of address, and it can affect the price. Tell us when you get your quote so we match you with a buyer who’s happy to take it. You’ll then need to write to the DVLA to tell them the car has been scrapped, as you won’t have the logbook slip to send.
What if my car has outstanding finance?
You’ll need to settle the finance first. The finance company owns the car until it’s paid off, so ask them for a settlement figure before you scrap it. Once it’s cleared, get your quote as normal.
Can I scrap my car if I have no keys?
Yes. We buy cars with no keys all the time; just tell us when you get your quote so the buyer sends a truck that can winch it on. It can affect the price a little, as the car will need to be moved rather than driven.
Do I get a road tax refund when I scrap my car?
Yes. Once the DVLA has been told the car has been scrapped, any full months of tax left are refunded automatically to the address on the V5C, and any Direct Debit is cancelled. You don’t need to apply for it. You do, however, need to manually cancel your insurance after you’ve scrapped your car – don’t forget to do this yourself!
How do I tell the DVLA I've scrapped my car?
Fill in the yellow section of your V5C with the buyer’s details and send it to the DVLA, or do it online at gov.uk using the reference number on the logbook. The buyer keeps the rest of the V5C with the car. The DVLA will write to confirm, and that letter is your proof you’re no longer responsible for the vehicle.
Do I get a Certificate of Destruction?
Yes, if your car is scrapped rather than sold for salvage. The Authorised Treatment Facility that destroys it issues the Certificate of Destruction, usually within seven days, and it’s your proof the car has been legally scrapped. If the car goes to a salvage buyer instead, it isn’t destroyed, so you won’t get one; the DVLA confirmation letter covers you there.
Can somebody else be present for collection instead of me?
Yes. If you can’t make it to the collection, another responsible adult can be there in your absence. They will need their own for of photo ID and should have the V5C and any other vehicle documentation to hand.
