How is salvaging different from scrapping?
Car salvaging is the process of reclaiming the vehicle so it isn’t dismantled and recycled, but instead fixed or stripped for parts. Salvaging nearly always gets you a better price for your car or van, but we do need to know more about the car’s condition. Find out how to salvage your car.
What will happen to my scrap car?
If your car is scrapped then the vehicle will be depolluted and recycled, and you’ll get a Certificate of Destruction to confirm it. This means all of the components and parts will be stripped and processed in line with national environmental standards. Nearly all of the materials will be recycled, with many used to build new cars, in what is considered a circular automotive economy. Find out more about car recycling.
What documents do I need to scrap my car?
You’ll need photo ID and proof of address, plus your V5C logbook if you have it. Hand the logbook over with the car, but keep the yellow section so you can tell the DVLA it’s been scrapped.
Can I scrap my car without a V5C?
Yes, a missing V5C logbook won’t stop you scrapping your car. Photo ID and proof of address will usually do instead. Just mention it when you get your quote so the collector knows in advance.
Can I scrap a car with outstanding finance?
Not while money is still owed on a hire purchase or PCP deal, as the finance company owns the car until it’s paid off. Settle the balance or speak to your lender first. Once that’s sorted, you can get a quote and scrap it as normal.
Can I scrap my car if I don’t have the keys?
Yes, a car with no keys can still be scrapped. Let us know when you get your quote, as it can affect a salvage offer and the collector will need to know before they arrive.
Will I get a road tax refund when I scrap my car?
Yes. Once the DVLA knows your car has been scrapped, it refunds any full months of vehicle tax left. The refund is worked out from the date the DVLA gets that information, and the cheque goes to the name and address on your V5C logbook. Any Direct Debit for your vehicle tax is cancelled automatically.
How do I tell the DVLA I’ve scrapped my car?
You can tell the DVLA online, or post the yellow section of your V5C logbook. Do it as soon as the car has been collected, as you can be fined £1,000 if the DVLA isn’t told.
What happens on collection day?
When your car is picked up, the collector will give it a quick look over to ensure the details you provided are accurate. They’re looking to see if any parts are missing or have been removed. Missing parts, such as wheels or the catalytic converter, can result in a lowered offer. When all is approved, the collector will load your vehicle onto their truck for removal before processing your payment.
Do I need to be present for collection?
No, collection can be overseen by somebody else if you can’t be there yourself. The person will need to be over the age of 18 and should have their own form of photo ID on hand, along with the car’s documentation (V5C logbook).
Can I keep my private number plate when I scrap my car?
Yes, you can apply for your private reg to be placed onto retention by the DVLA. By doing so, you are protecting your unique registration number from being destroyed along with the car. When you purchase a new motor, get in touch with the DVLA again and they will allow you to put the plate back onto your new car.
How do I get the best price for my car in Lancashire?
