Can I scrap a car with outstanding finance?
Not until the finance is settled. Until then, the car legally belongs to the finance company, so you’ll need to pay off the balance or get their written permission first. Your lender can give you a settlement figure.
Can I scrap my car if I don’t have the keys?
Yes. A missing key won’t stop you scrapping your car. Just tell our team when you get your quote, so the collection driver comes with the right equipment to load it.
Do I get a road tax refund when I scrap my car?
Yes, if there’s any tax left on it. Once the DVLA knows the car has been scrapped, they’ll automatically refund any full months remaining and cancel your Direct Debit if you pay that way. The refund is worked out from the date the DVLA receives your information.
How do I tell the DVLA I’ve scrapped my car?
You can tell the DVLA online, using the 11-digit reference number from your V5C logbook and the name and address of the Authorised Treatment Facility taking the car. Ask for those details at collection. Do it straight away, as you’re still responsible for the car until the DVLA knows it’s gone.
Will I get a Certificate of Destruction?
Yes, if your car is scrapped. The Authorised Treatment Facility that scraps it issues a Certificate of Destruction, which confirms the car has been destroyed and you’re no longer responsible for it. If your car is bought to be repaired rather than scrapped, it won’t get one.
Do I need to be there for collection?
You do not need to be present if you are unavailable, and can nominate someone to represent you if necessary. The person representing you must be over the age of 18 with ID and proof of address. This is also the case if you are scrapping a car on behalf of someone else, such as an elderly relative or after a bereavement – although you must make this clear whilst getting a quote in this situation.
Can I keep my private number plate?
Yes you can, however you must make sure you follow the relevant processes first, otherwise it could be lost forever. You’ll need to transfer it to another vehicle or put it on retention to avoid it being lost when your car is put through the crusher.
Can I scrap a car not at my address?
Absolutely! We can pick up a car from anywhere, whether that’s your driveway, a garage or a car park – just make sure you let us know as early as possible if it’s in a difficult to reach location, or stranded at the side of a road.
How do I prepare my car for collection?
Make sure you have removed all of your personal belongings from the car and cleared any passages to make it easier for the collector. Be extra sure to check your glovebox and boot, especially for items such as dashcams and parking permits, as these are regularly forgotten.
