What documents do I need to scrap my car?
You’ll need your V5C logbook and photo ID. Hand the V5C to the collector but keep the yellow slip, as you’ll need it to tell the DVLA. Having the keys ready helps too, but don’t worry if something’s missing, just let us know when you get your quote.
Can I scrap my car without a V5C?
Yes, you can still scrap your car without the V5C logbook. You’ll need photo ID and some proof the car is yours, such as a receipt or an old MOT certificate. Just mention it when you describe your car so we can let the collector know.
Can I scrap a car with outstanding finance?
Not until the finance is settled. While there’s money owing, the car usually still belongs to the finance company, so you’ll need to pay it off or get the lender’s permission first. Once that’s sorted, you can get your quote as normal.
Can I scrap my car if I’ve lost the keys?
Yes. Cars with no keys are one of the vehicles we buy every day. Just tell us when you describe your car so the collector knows before they arrive.
Do I get a road tax refund when I scrap my car?
Yes. Once the DVLA knows your car has been scrapped, it will automatically refund any full months of tax left. The refund goes to the name and address on the V5C, and any Direct Debit is cancelled for you.
How do I tell the DVLA I’ve scrapped my car?
You can tell the DVLA online once your car has been collected, using the yellow slip from your V5C. Give the rest of the V5C to the collector. It only takes a few minutes, and you could be fined up to £1,000 if you don’t do it.
Will I get a Certificate of Destruction?
Yes. The Authorised Treatment Facility that scraps your car will issue a Certificate of Destruction. It’s your proof the car has been scrapped legally and that you’re no longer responsible for it.
Can I keep my personalised number plate
Yes you can, however you must make sure you follow the relevant processes first, otherwise it could be lost forever. You’ll need to transfer it to another vehicle or put it on retention to avoid it being lost when your car is put through the crusher.
Do I have to be there for the collection?
You do not need to be present if you are unavailable, and can nominate someone to represent you if necessary. The person representing you must be over the age of 18 with ID and proof of address. This is also the case if you are scrapping a car on behalf of someone else, such as an elderly relative or after a bereavement – although you must make this clear whilst getting a quote in this situation.
What do I do after the collection?
Once your car has been collected remember to cancel any insurance and breakdown cover you have for it. Failing to do so will mean you may be paying for a car you no longer own. You should also keep a look out for your DVLA road tax refund.
