How is salvaging different from scrapping?
Car salvaging is the process of reclaiming the vehicle so it isn’t dismantled and recycled, but instead fixed or stripped for parts. Salvaging nearly always gets you a better price for your car or van, but we do need to know more about the car’s condition. Find out how to salvage your car.
What will happen to my scrap car?
If your car is scrapped then the vehicle will be recycled. This means all of the components and parts will be stripped and depolluted in line with Environment Agency standards. Nearly all of the materials will be used to build new cars in what is considered a circular automotive economy. Find out more about car recycling.
What documents do I need to scrap my car?
You’ll usually need your V5C logbook, photo ID and proof of address. The V5C is the important one, as it shows you’re the registered keeper and lets the buyer notify the DVLA properly. Have them ready on collection day and the whole thing takes a couple of minutes.
Can I scrap my car without a V5C logbook?
Yes, you can, it just takes a little longer. You’ll need other proof the car is yours, such as photo ID, proof of address and paperwork like old MOT certificates or a service history. Mention it when you get your quote so we can point you at a buyer who’s happy to work with it.
Will I get a Certificate of Destruction?
Yes, you can request one as long as your car is scrapped rather than salvaged. The Authorised Treatment Facility issues the Certificate of Destruction and tells the DVLA, which confirms the car has been permanently taken off the road and that it’s no longer your responsibility. It normally comes through within a few days of collection.
How will I be paid?
Payment goes straight into your bank account once the car has been collected. Scrap car payments are always made by bank transfer rather than cash, because paying cash for scrap vehicles isn’t legal in the UK. If anyone offers you cash for a scrap car, that’s a reason to walk away.
What if my car still has outstanding finance?
You can’t scrap a car that still has finance on it until the agreement is settled or the finance company gives written permission. The lender has a legal interest in the car until then. Check the balance with them first, and once it’s cleared you can go ahead as normal.
Do I get a road tax refund when I scrap my car?
Yes. Once the DVLA has been told the car has been scrapped, they’ll automatically refund any full months of tax you have left and cancel your direct debit. The refund goes to the registered keeper, so it’s worth checking the address on your V5C is up to date before collection.
Do I need to be there when the car is collected?
Not necessarily. Someone else can meet the driver on your behalf as long as they’re over 18, can get to the car and have the paperwork and keys with them. Just let us know in advance so the collection can be booked in properly.
What if I’ve lost the keys?
Not a problem. Our buyers collect cars with no keys all the time and it won’t stop you getting a quote. Just tell us when you give us the details of the car, so the collection can be arranged with the right kit.
