The Top Scrapped Cars of 2021

It’s that time again – as we wave farewell to 2021 and welcome in 2022, it’s time for the team here at Scrap Car Comparison to do our annual digging into the figures to highlight which cars we’ve helped through the scrap process over the last 12 months.

But which make and model of vehicles have the public sent to the scrapheap the most? Read on to find out!

The Most Scrapped Car Models of 2021

We’ve been creating these ‘most scrapped cars of the year’ guides for five years now (you can also see the results from 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020), and in that time the same four cars have unwaveringly taken the top four spots. The Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Fiesta once again take these top positions as the most scrapped car models of the year.

  1. Ford Focus
  2. Vauxhall Astra
  3. Vauxhall Corsa
  4. Ford Fiesta
  5. Volkswagen Golf
  6. Renault Clio
  7. Vauxhall Zafira
  8. Peugeot 206
  9. Volkswagen Polo
  10. Ford Mondeo

Once you pass positions one to four, the rest of the list is also a fairly similar picture to last year – while the order is slightly different, the models of car are the same. There is, however, just one notable difference with the Vauxhall Vectra dropping out and being replaced by the Ford Mondeo.

The similar pattern of car models on our annual most scrapped lists is no huge surprise – the average age of scrapped vehicles is around 14 years old and if we look back to the most popular cars in 2007 we can see these were the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa. In fact, these models are the most popular cars (in this exact order) for another four years until Fiesta takes the top spot and the Volkswagen Golf pushes the Vauxhall Astra out of the top four. It could take us a few more years to see many major changes in our most scrapped lists!

So, we can see the models of car which have been scrapped the most, but what if we break it down into just the brands behind the vehicle – which car manufacturers have seen their creations headed to the scrapyard the most this year?

  1. Ford
  2. Vauxhall
  3. Volkswagen

What Happens to These Cars Once They’re Sent to the Scrap Yard?

Once you’ve secured a quote for scrapping your vehicle, and have arranged for collection, that might be the last you’d see of your vehicle – but all of these tens of thousands of Ford Focuses and Vauxhall Astras have a few final steps left before the end of their life. They’ll be emptied of fuel, stripped of parts, crushed and recycled, ready to start their life as something new. You can learn more about the journey a scrapped car takes here.
