Common Problems We’ve Seen With Citroen
| “Don’t Drive” Recall on older C3, C4, DS3, DS4, and DS5 models due to faulty Takata airbags that can explode | A major recall is currently ongoing due to dangerous airbags in a number of Citroen models. Of course, our initial tip would be to do as instructed, but if you are desperate to sell up we will be able to assist thanks to our dedicated team of experts. |
| Turbo failures on 1.6 HDi diesels | If you’ve neglected your regular oil change regime, you could have caused many more problems than you realised, and oil starvation can cause turbo failure. Blocked Diesel Particulate Filters are also very common issues on cars that have not been given long runs regularly. If your engine has failed, we’ll still be able to get you a great price if the rest of the car is in good condition. |
| Ignition coils, spark plugs and mechanism issues on 1.6 THP petrol engines | An engine replacement is usually the sign that it’s time to give up on keeping your car going. Get rid of any stresses and hefty labour costs and use our service to get yourself a sale at the best possible price in no time at all. |
| Alternator failure leading to battery drain | A dead battery isn’t going to make you scrap your car (or at least it shouldn’t), but a dodgy alternator can be quite a pricey repair job. Save the hassle and sell in an instant, call our on-hand experts for an instant valuation. |
| Sensodrive gearbox causing rough shifts and gearbox failure | Just because your gearbox is broken doesn’t mean you’ve lost all value in your car. If the engine is still mechanically sound you’re likely to have plenty of value sitting under the bonnet. Get in touch and we’ll help you extract everything you can. |
| Corrosion near welds | Finding rust bubbles on a car is never a good sign, and you just know you’re staring at a future expensive bill. Repairing rust can actually cause your car to be more dangerous, so the best thing to do is give us a call and get a quote. |
Citroen Scrap Trends
Citroen doesn’t enjoy the best reputation within the motoring spaces, with most remembering the 2CV above any of its more successful vehicles. While we saw no 2CVs over the past 12 months, we did see thousands of Citroens come through our doors and what came through provided some interesting data in line with a brand where “interesting” is a fair description.
Most scrapped models
The most common Citroen we helped get scrap prices for was the popular family crossover the C4, which accounted for just under a quarter (24.5%) of all Citroens on our system. The smaller C3 was next on our list at 22.6%. We often find that the small hatchbacks like the C3 are the most common, so for the top vehicle to be a crossover goes against the grain slightly. Third was taken by the Berlingo at 14.2%, just 0.5% more than the C1 in fourth. The dated Xsara rounds out the top five at 7%.
Most scrapped year/average age
Citroen actually enjoys quite a high average age of vehicle to come through our books at 19 years old, which goes against the reputation for French cars to be less than reliable. Much of the currently available models tend to hover around the 16 year old mark, in line with the national average, but the brand’s figures are skewed by a high proportion of older vehicles only just reaching the end of their respective roads. These include the Xsara (average age of 20), the Saxo (25), the Xantia (27), the ZX (30) and the Visa (38). The Visa was, on average, the fourth oldest model vehicle we saw all year.

Is any car too damaged to scrap?
Definitely not! Your damaged, broken, or failed MOT car can be scrapped. Get an instant quote and arrange collection for your car in the UK – even if it’s a non-runner!
What's the difference between scrap and salvage?
When a car is salvaged, the buyer will break it apart and retrieve any surviving parts from inside that can be resold or reused in other vehicles. Salvage cars are usually worth more than scrap. Scrap vehicles are simply crushed and their materials are then recycled.
What happens to scrapped cars?
When you sell your car as scrap, it will be recycled by one of our licensed end-of-life vehicle professionals. They will dispose of your car safely and legally, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
How much are scrap vehicles worth in the UK?
Scrap Car Comparison finds prices that are based on the average value of scrap metal in the UK. This is because the scrap value of a car is mostly influenced by its overall weight. Heavier vehicles are made from more metal. There are other, more complex factors involved, but weight is the big one.
