Non-Fungible Motors: Winner’s Land Rover Immortalised As An NFT

Much like pets, your cars really do become part of the family if you stick with them long enough. They’ll take you on epic road trips and late night drives, while simultaneously offering comfort when you’re stuck in traffic on your morning commute. At Scrap Car Comparison, we realised this and wanted to offer one lucky winner the chance to have their very own vehicle preserved forever in art form.

A Non-Fungible Token (NFT), for those not in-the-know, is a digital asset that links to exclusive ownership of an item – usually digital – which in this case is a 3-dimensional, detailed rendering of a vehicle! NFTs can be bought and sold, or traded, over the internet and owning one will grant you a ‘digital receipt’ which is then secured using blockchain technology. NFTs are truly unique in the sense that the one you own is yours and only yours. Replicas could be made, but they’ll never be yours or hold the same value. It works in a similar sense to famous paintings or, indeed, your own car; there might be multiple Land Rovers out there, but there’s only one of your Land Rover.

Except for one of the iconic British off-roaders, that is, which has been exactly replicated in NFT form online, where it will live on forever!

The Winning NFT – ‘Walking With Lions’

The Winning NFT – ‘Walking With Lions’

And here it is, the beloved Land Rover, digitally modelled and put on the pedestal that our winner Shaun feels it deserves – and we’re certain that his late father Barry, the owner of the car before his passing, would feel the same. Barry’s Land Rover even comes complete with accessories, including luggage, a pipe and a can of Coca Cola! Not to mention the personalised number plates that reference the name of the artistic piece, ‘Walking With Lions’.

Contest winner Shaun told us a little bit about his dad’s car, explaining just how special this vehicle was to both Barry himself and the family as a whole:

“Barry was a man that went camping for weeks on end – just him and his Land Rover. He loved that car. He would drive around town showing people pictures of it in the different spots and places he took it. I think he had it for about 40 years but had to sell it. It was tragic and I’m still gutted today that it had to leave the family. My wife grew up driving through the country exploring and singing in the Land Rover with Barry. It had a solid feeling. Barry would be up early fixing, cleaning and faffing with it.”

Barry’s virtual vehicle was created by digital NFT artist Amy Kilner who has previously completed two other car-related Tokens based on a Vauxhall and a Volkswagen, two of the most scrapped cars of 2021.

Shaun continued:

“Barry has passed. My wife and I always speak of buying an exact Land Rover one day when we have enough money. Then I saw the Scrap Car Comparison opportunity and entered. We love our NFT. It’s not quite the real thing but it means a lot to us. It brings back memories”.

As you’ll see from the images of Barry’s car, the attention to detail when modelling this NFT was incredible, with everything including the spare wheel, rear ladder and snorkel exhaust! And while artist Amy is able to model any bumps, dents or damaged parts that the winning vehicle carried on its journeys, Shaun’s story rings true – it seems that Barry took good care of his Land Rover and it doesn’t look like it would be heading to the scrap heap any time soon!
