A popular car in Italian cities, the Smart car is often looked at quite mockingly in the UK due to its diminutive stature, despite enjoying a popular boom in the early 2000s. Here’s what we’ve found over the past 12 months from Smarts coming through our service.
Most scrapped models
When most people think of a Smart car, what they’re actually thinking of the Smart Fortwo. Due to its prevalence, there’s no surprise that the Fortwo sits at the top of the most scrapped models. With all its various names taken into account, the traditional ‘Smart Car’ accounts for 57% of all Smarts we scrapped with the Fortwo Coupe taking the lion’s share at 35%. The City (16%) was actually the original name for what would become the Fortwo, and narrowly beat the standard Fortwo (14%) with the Fortwo Cabriolet last of the model at 7%. The slightly larger Forfour took 20% of the share, while the Roadster took 11%.
Most scrapped year/average age
Smarts do look relatively reliable on the face of it, sitting around 18 years old on average before getting scrapped. The Forfour clocks in at the youngest at just 15 years on average, while the Fortwo (across all various model names) came in at the brand’s average of 18 – although the City was the most reliable at 22, helped by the name change meaning there are few younger bearing the City name around at all. The Roadster wasn’t far off the City’s record, coming in on average at 21 years old.
