MG Scrap Trends
MG as a brand has almost had more twists and turns than a Hollywood movie. From starting off as one of the big British brands dating back to its Oxford roots, before merging with Austin to become the British Motor Corporation, then being part of another merger creating the iconic British Leyland, another sale to Rover Group and then finally being sold to the Nanjing Automobile Group (which itself merged with SAIC in 2011). The MG story is legendary, and it’s testament to the popularity of the brand that we still see hundreds of cars sold as scrap every year. Here’s what we found over the past 12 months.
Most scrapped models
The most scrapped models for MG is surprisingly evenly distributed between original models and modern Chinese models. The F and TF sit at the top, accounting for just over half of all MGs scrapped between them at 27% and 25% respectively. The next two models are from the brand’s relaunch, with the MG3 taking 19% of all MGs scrapped, and 17% taken by the MG6.
Most scrapped year/average age
Overall the average age of a scrap MG is above the average for vehicles in the UK, but this is possibly an anomaly due to the unique nature of the brand itself. The average is brought down by the modern MGs, with the 3 being scrapped on average after 9 years and the 6 after 11. Meanwhile, the average for the original British-built vehicles sits at 23 years old – but again, this is largely skewed due to the closure of the British brand in the mid-2000s.
