One of the oldest cities in the country, York could soon see cars removed from its mediaeval centre as one of the growing number of locations to feature Clean Air Schemes popping up around the nation. However, many drivers do not realise that such a plan already exists within the city – Let Scrap Car Comparison guide you through everything you need to know about York’s Clean Air Zone.
Where are the zones in place?
York’s Clean Air Zone is currently in place within the inner ring road, and is for buses that regularly operate within the boundary set by the ring road.
Do I need to pay the daily fee?
Only bus operators will be affected by the current CAZ, however, if the plans to remove traffic from York City Centre does come to fruition, the chances of charges for general motorists grows exponentially. Scrap Car Comparison will keep this page fully updated as soon as there are any changes to the restrictions.
How much will I pay?
At present, there are no daily charges for individual vehicles, with the rules only applying to the most polluting diesel buses. However, if York does choose to implement a plan similar to that seen currently trialled in Oxford, then charges could be in the region of £8 up to £20 per car.
Can I get a grant to get a compliant vehicle?
As there is no Clean Air Zone in place affecting the majority of drivers in the city, there are no grants in place currently for private or commercial vehicles to replace their older cars with more green options. However, taxi drivers, working within the city centre and licenced by the City of York Council, are able to apply for a grant of up to £3000 to put towards a newer, less polluting, taxi that adheres to Euro 6 emissions regulations. Full details of the scheme, including who can or can’t apply and the restrictions on what the grant can be used for, can be found at the City of York Council website.
