MOT inspection in progress

MOT during lockdown – June update

Here at Scrap Car Comparison, we are still open for business, operating a no contact service under the government’s guidance on social distancing. As the COVID-19 restrictions are slowly lifted in the UK, we wanted to give you an update from the Department of Transport, announced on Monday 29 June 2020.

If your car, van or motorcycle’s MOT test is due after 1 August 2020, then it will be mandatory for your vehicle to complete an MOT test.

Roads Minister Baroness Vere from the Department of Transport said: “As people return to our roads, it is vital that motorists are able to keep their vehicles safe. That’s why as restrictions are eased, from 1 August MOT testing will again become mandatory.”

So what does this MOT update mean for me?

If your car, van or motorcycle’s MOT was due on or after 30th March 2020, the MOT expiry date will still be extended by six months – this will run up until 1 August. Your vehicle’s MOT expiry date will be extended automatically online, there’s nothing you need to do to ensure the extension is granted.

However, if your MOT test is due after 1 August 2020, then it will be mandatory again for your vehicle to complete its MOT test on its due date.

Can I check to see if my MOT expiry date has been extended?

Yes. You can check the status and history of your MOT online via the gov.uk website. You can also opt for a reminder to tell you when your MOT test is getting near.

What happens next with MOT tests?

If your MOT test has been extended, your vehicle must be kept in a roadworthy condition, if it’s not, you could be fined up to £2,500, potentially receive penalty points and you could face a driving ban for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Your vehicle should be safe and legal to drive at all times. So, it’s more important than ever to monitor the condition of your car, van or motorcycle yourself until you can take it for a professional MOT.
