Changes to the V5C

From 15th April 2019, the V5C Registration Certificate was changed to improve both customer experience and to help with the transition to digitising data. Your current V5C/log book will still be valid, however, if you have a V5C issued now, it will be in the new format. Below, we cover everything you need to know about these changes and how we’ve made sure it’s still easy to scrap your car!

What is a V5C?

A V5C is a vehicle registration document that registers your vehicle to your name with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). This paper document is proof of ownership of your vehicle and will state specific details such as:

  • Your car’s registration.
  • The date it was registered.
  • The colour.
  • Engine size.

When purchasing or selling a car, the DVLA need to be made aware about the change of keeper’s details such as name and address.

What has changed on the V5C?

There have been several changes to the V5C both internally and externally including:

  • The reference number is now at the top of the document and the words ‘Don’t share, keep it safe’ have been added.
  • A colour coded guidance section has been added to the bottom of the front page.
  • A vehicle licensing compliance message has been added to the front page.
  • Vehicle details have been rearranged to make space for more data.
  • Instructions have been simplified.
  • The opportunity to supply contact details has been added.
  • Change of keeper and change of name or address sections have been separated. This makes the page more customer friendly.
  • The name and address field of section 6 has been removed to prevent customers returning it to the DVLA by mistake.
  • Signature boxes have been replaced with red declarations.
  • Data capture boxes have been added to improve accuracy.
  • A reference number has been added to each section of the V5C.
  • The green new keeper slip is now the only perforated section of the V5C.

To receive vehicle information from the DVLA, you can visit gov.uk to use their online service that allows you to check the status of your vehicle. Simply enter the registration plate and you can find out the vehicle’s current state of road tax, the year it was made, its colour and engine size, as well as the date it was first registered.

If you are scrapping your car, you should hand over your V5C and keep the section you need as a notification of sale or transfer. Once the car is scrapped, the car scrappage company will then receive a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) from the DVLA which removes their responsibility from the vehicle.
