How does it work when you donate a car?

If you’re thinking about donating your car, one of the first steps you will need to take is to either fill in our Donate a Car online form or give the team a call on 03333 449950.

Your vehicle’s details will then be put through an expansive database of buyers to find you best price for your vehicle.

Cars that are sold through Scrap Car Comparison typically fall into two different categories – scrap vehicles and salvage vehicles. The category into which it falls will determine both the price you are quoted, and what will happen to your vehicle next.

Can you donate a car that needs work?

You can donate a car to charity that needs work. Whether your car falls under the scrap vehicle category, which is generally for those that are severely damaged or that are over 10 years old, or it falls under the salvage category meaning it is too good for scrap, you can still donate it. The same goes for a donating a car that does not run.

Where can I donate my car for money?

There are several organisations that run scrap car donation schemes, including Scrap Car Comparison. But, if you donate with us we’ll come to you and collect your vehicle hassle free and ensure that your proceeds go straight to your chosen charity.

Should I donate or sell my old car?

Unless your car is in good or excellent condition, it is likely to be sold at an auction. This means that your case deduction would be based on its sale price, not its market value. So, rather than your car going to auction, it would be better to sell your car and then donate the money to charity.

What do you do with the title when you donate a car?

To prepare your vehicle’s title for donation, you will need to:

  • Complete the applicable section of the V5C document.
  • If you donate via Scrap Car Comparsion then we can assist you with the paperwork.

Can you donate a car with a salvage title / insurance write-off category?

Yes, you can donate a car with an insurance write-off category. In fact, donating a car with a salvage title is a great solution as its quick, easy and will be hassle free with us.

My car has been written off or is in a bad condition, can I still donate?

Yes! Our comparison service searches nationwide to find the best price for your vehicle no matter what the vehicle’s condition or the title of the car. You are still able to scrap your vehicle and donate the profits to charity through us.

What paperwork do you need to donate a car?

If you are thinking about donating your car, you will need some or all of the following paperwork depending on where you are based and who you are scrapping with:

  • A valid passport issued by a European Economic Area state
  • Accepted proof of address (which must not be older than three months)
  • A bank or building society statement
  • A credit or debit card statement
  • A council tax statement or demand letter
  • A utility bill

We only require a photo ID if the vehicle being collected has the log book (V5).

How much of charity money goes to the cause?

The vast majority of car donation schemes give 100% of the scrap value to charity, but you should always check with the company first.

At Scrap Car Comparison, 100% of your donation goes to your chosen charity. You can choose to donate some, or all of the profits, it’s up to you!
