How We Price Your Ford EcoBoost Engine

Every quote we generate is based off the details we get from your registration plate. From this we can see your car’s model, year of manufacture, weight, MOT status and estimated mileage. From this we can check to see if it could be sold as salvage as opposed to scrap. Even if your Ecoboost engine has failed and needs replacing, we’ll likely be looking to salvage the vehicle and give you a payout that reflects the entire car’s value.

In 2024 alone, we offered to buy 30,000 Fords – many of them with failed EcoBoost engines. We got each driver a great price for their car as salvage, offering much more than they would have received had they sold the vehicle as scrap instead.

Even if your Ford’s EcoBoost engine is dead and the car is a non-runner, we’ll get you a fair and accurate valuation, with good money offered as scrap or salvage for the vehicle.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Ford EcoBoost engine didn’t only power vehicles from the Blue Oval? Under the guise of ‘PTDi’ (Petrol turbocharged direct injection), the EcoBoost was also found in Volvos during Ford’s tenure owning the Swedish brand. This ended when Volvo was sold to Chinese Geely Holding in 2010.

What Is Wrong With Ford EcoBoost Engines?

This is the million dollar question for Ford, especially since the problem became so common that even BBC’s Watchdog got involved to recover some compensation for hard-done-by drivers.

In most cases, the root of the problem is a coolant leak. The early models used pipes made of nylon which were prone to failure when faced with extreme temperatures. In fact, in 2015, they even recalled models with this type of engine!

Turbocharger and gasket issues were also far too common, and the rapid degradation of the wet belt (which is a timing belt that runs coated in oil) was also infamous on the 1.0L EcoBoost specifically. This type of timing belt was supposed to be better than the typical ‘dry’ one, but is actually much more likely to corrode and clog up the engine, starving it of oil. The irony!

How Much Does It Cost To Replace A Ford EcoBoost Engine?

This really depends on whether you’re after a revamped used engine, or a brand new one. Different parts, like the wet belt or coolant pumps, can be replaced separately. But, whatever route you go down, it’s not going to be cheap. All-in-all, the average price for a new EcoBoost engine is £5,000 to £6,000!

Can I Take My Car To A Ford EcoBoost Specialist?

There are specialist mechanics who deal with Fords, and in particular EcoBoost engines, but as we mentioned in the previous section, the price is still going to be very high. Whether it’s the dreaded wet belt failure that’s killed your car or a turbocharger problem draining its power, you’re going to spend a lot to get it fixed, and probably be better off getting a new car!

FAQs

Can I scrap just my EcoBoost engine?

Scrap Car Comparison doesn’t deal in individual car parts, but we would not recommend doing this anyway. Scrapping your engine alone will leave you with a useless car, and scrapping a broken engine won’t get you enough cash to replace it! In fact, this kind of repair can often set you back the cost of a new car! You’ll still have a non-running Ford sitting on your driveway, so in many situations, you’re better off scrapping the whole thing. And that’s when Scrap Car Comparison can get you a top price!

Will a broken EcoBoost engine affect my scrap value?

If your car is a non-runner because its engine has died, you might see slightly lower prices offered for the vehicle, especially if you were instead hoping to sell it as salvage. However, scrap prices are mainly based on the weight of the vehicle, and it’ll weigh the same whether its engine works or not! Get a quote now and see what your broken old Ford is worth.

My Ford is in good condition, except for the broken engine – what can I do?

Great! Sell it as salvage instead with Scrap Car Comparison! This means that the engine will (most likely) be scrapped, but the rest of the car will be dismantled so that the working bits & pieces can be retrieved and reused in other vehicles. Salvaging your Ford will get you better prices than scrapping it too!
