How Does Car Recycling Work?

Once a vehicle is received at an ATF (Authorised Treatment Facility), it goes through three main stages;

  1. The first stage of car recycling is removing hazardous waste.
  2. After that the salvageable parts are removed, to be transplanted into other vehicles.
  3. Lastly the vehicles remaining frame is crushed and sent to a steel mill to be recycled into re-usable materials.

Recycling A Car: Vehicle Fluid Drain

This is the clinical process of removing all of a cars fluids safely. Various chambers are drained and flushed to ensure that no residue remains within the vehicle. This will include removing the fuel, oil, engine coolant, and brake fluid through a number of methods. These include techniques such as filtration, distillation, and reverse osmosis, to name a few.

All hazardous waste is then taken to a licensed depot for safe disposal.

 

Recycling A Car: Recycling A Cars Reusable Car Parts

The second stage involves striping the cars for parts. These can include components like alternators, gearboxes, and engines. The parts that are removed are then sold to garages and private buyers to be used in other vehicles.

Recycling Car Batteries

Automotive batteries are often resold as spares or disassembled for their components.

The battery compononets can include distilled water, silver, lead, acid, and plastic.

The ATF will neutralise the acid and purify the water for safe disposal. They will then melt down the metals to be re-purposed.

Again, all hazardous waste is disposed of by a licensed depot for safe and environmentally friendly disposal.

Recycling Catalytic Converters

Catalytic Converters contain precious metals such as Palladium, Platinum, and Rhodium. These precious metals can be removed and reused in various pharmaceuticals products, electronics, and jewelry, among many other uses. They can also be used in the production of new catalytic converters.

Important Safety Note! Due to the toxic contents of catalytic converters, they should only be recycled by trained professionals. The ceramic interior of the converters are considered to be hazardous waste once opened and exposed to the air.

Recycling Car Tyres

Tyres  have always been one of the more difficult parts to find a second use for. Today they are most commonly sold as part worn, or re-treaded to be used again.

In recent years though, all sorts of interesting new uses have been found for them. Some are ground up and used as roadbed and running track material, as well as playground mulch. They are even used as a fuel alternative and as building material in certain circumstances.

Recycling A Car: Recycling Car Metal

The final stage of recycling a car is when the metal shell of the car is crushed and sent to a metal mill. The metal mill will then:

  1. Shred the car
  2. Separate the metal from the other materials, such as plastics, glass, cloth
  3. Melt the car metal into useful forms, such as Rebar.

Rebar is typically used in the construction industry, to strengthen and frame concrete structures.

Statistics show that this method of recycling steel uses 75% less energy and resources than producing new steel from iron ore.

In fact, recycled metals account for around 30% of metal production worldwide!

Glass can be recycled over and over again. It can be melted down and re-used in new cars, or be put to use in new building materials.

Vehicle Recycling Law

Current UK legislation ensures that a vehicles owner is entitled to a free method of disposal when it has come to the end of it’s life. As a result, ATF’s are required by law to make the process simple and environmentally sound. Ensuring a high standard of service, no matter where in the country you are.

Since 2000, the End of Life Vehicles Directive set and met an initial target of recycling 85% of End-Of-Life-Vehicles. Due to it’s success, as of last year the target for car recycling had increased to 95%!
